Not only that, it uses a heavily-modified version of the “Doom” engine (so it’s in pseudo-3D rather than “true” 3D). “ Sonic Robo Blast 2” is a free fan-made sprite-based 3D platform game based on the old 2D “Sonic” games. But, for reasons I’ll explain later, this game still made me feel very nostalgic. This also means that, although I have a small amount of nostalgia about Sonic, I probably didn’t feel quite as much nostalgia when I played this game as people who grew up with Sega consoles will probably feel. As such, I didn’t really discover any of the “Sonic” games until I was in my late teens (and found a few old 2D and 3D “Sonic” games which had been ported to the PC). It is generally considered that the first fullly fledged Sonic fan game produced was Sonic Boom (not to be confused with the TV show) in 1995. Sonic the Hedgehog fan games can be dated back to just shortly after the series was formed, likely with the Amiga releases of Sonic Attack and Sonic Game Preview, and the X68000 release of Mi ni Ikuzo! It is to be expected that a franchise with fans will receive supplimentary material from its community, be it fan art, fan fiction or even fan films in an effort to celebrate a concept which brings people together.
